Brough has changed more than almost anywhere else in East Yorkshire. A town once defined by its aircraft factory is now home to more than 13,000 people, many of them in new-build homes on and around the old airfield. A&R Cleaning offers cleaning services Brough and Elloughton homeowners use for windows, gutters, carpets and driveways, whether you moved in last month or have lived here for decades.
This page is split into two halves: what new-build owners usually need, and what the older parts of town need. If you just want a price, skip to the bottom.
From Blackburn’s factory to Brough South
Brough’s history runs deep. The Romans knew it as Petuaria, and the Haven on the Humber, a Roman harbour, is now home to the Humber Yawl Club, founded in 1883. The railway station opened in 1840, and in 1916 Blackburn Aircraft set up its factory here. The site went on to build the Buccaneer and, under British Aerospace and BAE Systems, the Hawk trainer, until manufacturing ended on Christmas Eve 2020.
Today, the biggest change is housing. The Brough South development has added large numbers of homes, and work on the former runway began around 2020 alongside the Brough Relief Road. Building is still going on in parts of town, and that matters for cleaning.
Living in a new-build in Brough: what to expect
If you bought on one of the newer estates, the cleaning services Brough new-build owners ask us about usually come down to these four:
- Construction dust on the glass. While neighbouring plots are still being built, fine dust settles on windows and frames. A one-off clean when you move in, then a regular round, keeps it under control.
- Mud on new block paving. Site traffic and unfinished verges carry soil onto drives. Light-coloured paving shows tyre marks and staining surprisingly quickly.
- Carpets that took the brunt of moving day. Builder-fitted carpets get heavy wear in the first months from boxes, furniture and visitors in outdoor shoes.
- Gutters you have never looked at. Young trees on estates drop less than old ones, but windblown litter, moss and builders’ debris can still block a downpipe.
Where to start
For most new homes, the best first step is a traditional window clean. We wash every pane by hand with an applicator and finish with a squeegee, which clears the gritty dust film without smearing it around. After that, a carpet clean for the lounge, stairs and landing refreshes the rooms that have had the hardest life since you moved in.
Older Brough, Elloughton and the streets near the station
Away from the new estates, Brough has a long stretch of twentieth-century housing that grew up around the station and the old works, along with the more established village of Elloughton just to the north, which shares the same parish. These homes have different needs from the new builds, and the cleaning services Brough households book here are more about upkeep than first cleans.
Mature gardens mean fuller gutters, and fascias and soffits on older uPVC often carry years of green staining on shaded sides. Our fascia, soffit and gutter cleaning scoops away the sodden leaves and moss clogging each run so rainwater flows again, and washes the algae off gutter faces and the boards behind them.
Elloughton sits closer to the rising ground of the Wolds, and drives near open land pick up more mud and leaf litter. Down by the Haven and the Humber shore, damp air keeps paving wet for longer, which encourages moss and algae. Larger, older gardens in Elloughton also mean noticeably more leaves to deal with every autumn.
Driveways and patios across the town
Whatever the age of your home, hard surfaces in Brough take a beating. New block paving stains, older concrete drives go green, and patios in shade become slippery after a wet winter. A pressure wash strips the green growth and ground-in dirt from drives, paths, patios and any other hard standing. Concrete drives on older homes near the station tend to go dark and patchy, while newer paving shows every spill and tyre mark.
A good rhythm for many Brough homes is a wash in spring, so the patio is ready for summer, and a check in late autumn once leaves have come down.
Cleaning services Brough residents can book together
Because so many homes here are similar in layout, it is easy to put a few jobs together and get the whole property looking right in one go. You might choose:
- Windows and gutters together, so the outside of the house is clean from top to bottom.
- A pressure wash of the drive followed by a window clean the same day.
- A move-in package of windows and carpets for a new home.
All of our cleaning services Brough customers use are available as one-off cleans or on a regular basis.
Getting a quote
Brough sits about a mile south of the A63, so it is easy for us to reach. Estates can have tight parking, with cars on both sides of the road in the evenings, so mention any drive space we could use.
For a free, no-obligation price, head to our contact page, ring 07338 612196 or write to info@arcleaning.co.uk. Snapshots of your windows, paving or carpets on WhatsApp or the quote form make quoting quicker.
For a pressure wash or window clean you are welcome to be at work, as long as the side gate is unlocked; carpet cleans need someone at home to let us in. We also cover South Cave, North Ferriby and Swanland nearby.
